Hays-Porter recognizes volunteer tutors

Hays-Porter School celebrated its Third Grade Reading Guarantee success with a Volunteer Tutor Recognition Ceremony on May 20, 2014.

Principal Nedria McClain, reading specialist Nancy Johnson and FamiliesFORWARD resource coordinator Richara Richardson gave short presentations on the benefits of one-on-one tutoring and how the tutors’ assistance this school year helped Hays-Porter students increase their test scores, and improve their attendance and behavior.

McClain also announced that all of the third-grade students at Hays-Porter would be moving on to the fourth grade after meeting the requirements of the state’s new Third Grade Reading Guarantee law.

The tutors were excited to hear the news, and many of them thanked the staff for allowing them the opportunity to work with the students. The tutors watched a video presentation with pictures of the tutors working with students throughout the school year. Each student presented a thank-you letter to his/her tutor, along with a light bulb filled with Lemonhead candy. The students told the tutors that every time they eat one of their Lemonheads that they should be reminded of how much of a “shining light” they were to the students in their tutoring/mentoring sessions.

The volunteer tutors and their students also shared breakfast together and then said their goodbyes.
