Hays-Porter students tour Freedom Center

Hays-Porter third-graders in FamiliesFORWARD’s After-School Program attended the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in downtown Cincinnati, learning about the impact of slavery in the United States.

During the Oct. 24, 2013, visit, students learned about how the Underground Railroad helped bring freedom to slaves, saw a cotton gin demonstration and heard about the many abolitionists who fought hard against slavery.

The two-hour tour was sponsored by Target Corp. Third-graders were chosen to attend because they have begun to learn about how communities are built, plus the experience helped students better understand their school-day curriculum.
